Supermarket Tea

Matcha vs. Other Green Teas
Matcha green tea powder and mixes are the healthiest of all the green teas because you utilize the entire tea leaf. Matcha is cultivated in Japan near Tokyo, mainly in the Shizuoka and Uji districts. Almost 150,00 acres are used to yield almost 15,000 pounds of tea per year - surely a world record. This is due to the warm climate, dense fogs, consistant rains and heavy dews. Japanese tea farmers grow the bushes side by side in rows and the fields look like rolling waves (pictured left). This makes it easy for their mechanical clippers to harvest the tea and is another reason why they efficiently produce so much tea. However, it actually takes one pound of green tea leaf to make approximately 1.5 ounces of Matcha powder. After the green leaves are harvested the stems and veins are removed, the pure leaves are finely milled to yield this intensely pure green tea powder.
As you can visualize it is a tedious and expenseive process to make Matcha green tea powder.
